I have heard that global warming will cause weather to generally become more severe - I don't know if the past two weeks are a confirmation of this, or perhaps just a fluke; either way we have been experiencing some heavy weather.
It began on 29 October 2012 when Huricane Sandy made landfall. Termed a super-storm she lived up to her billing in spades! At 4:32 PM we lost power as trees began falling like autumn leaves. Out behind the house one of our old oaks 60 or 70 feet tall was ripped out by its roots

(it had the good graces to fall between the house and the garage). Out front a pine of similar height forked about half-way up; one fork snapped off tangling in some power/data lines.

And to make matters worse the street at the bottom of our hill was completely blocked by fallen trees so repair crews would have to clean that up before they could even reach us.

... so after more than 6 days with no power, no hot water or hot food the power comes back on - briefly!
For two and a half days we were able to shower, cook, and generally feel somewhat civilized.
Then along comes a November Nor'easter.
They predicted winds of 35 - 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph with heavy rains and possibly snow. Well the snow lasted about 20 hours; piling on 7 or 8 inches, and taking down more trees. A different pine lost a large branch, falling across our power lines - so far they wires are supporting the weight. Power is back on (for now) - keeping my fingers crossed!
